Our Route Creation Services Business Is Booming!

Odyssey

“Route Creation Services” is the name we’ve coined for the modelling work we do for clients who either don’t have the ongoing need for an Odyssey licence and/or don’t have the resources available to use Odyssey as a modelling tool.

And business is booming! The revenue we received from Route Creation Services alone for the past financial year was over 50% more than from the previous year, and our forecasts for this year are even better. A lot of the projects we conducted were “tender modelling” projects, where we use Odyssey to estimate the travel time, travel distance, work time and transport costs, based on order and customer data provided as part of the tender process to the bidding transport companies.

Although we worked on a number of different tenders, including pharmacy and magazine contracts, the tenders that kept us particularly busy were the national tenders for Coles and Woolworths. I’m happy to say that we participated in the success of a few of the winners - which, of course, is very satisfying.

We were also commissioned by a number of companies to re-optimise the fixed routes used by their vans, trucks and sales reps. Runs for implementation require detailed information about the current run structure, but our clients find the data collection and documentation exercise well worth the effort, considering the cost savings realised.

If you want to analyse, model and/or cost your transport or sales rep operations, or re-optimise your runs for implementation, please give me a call.

New Optimising Engine A Hit With Users

Odyssey

As well as annual upgrades to Odyssey and our time and distance data, our users also get annual upgrades to Odyssey’s optimising engine. This part of the upgrade usually goes unnoticed, as new functionality tends to be added to the engine to meet a need of new client and prospect operations, rather than existing ones.

However, this year not only did it not go unnoticed, but our users are extremely excited about it! This is because the big change this year is the speed with which a schedule is optimised. A competitive edge of ours has always been how quickly our engine computes an optimal solution; now it comes up with that solution at least 10 times faster than in the past.

One user actually complained that he’s now going to miss out on his morning cuppa, as he used to be able to go and make that while waiting for the optimising to finish. Another commented that his boss now has to find more work for him to do to fill in the time he used to spend scheduling!

Odyssey Handy Hints - Cost the lead/return time

Handy

In some operations, your drivers may finish their shift at the final delivery point of the day, rather than returning to the depot.

To reflect this in Odyssey, there is a parameter called ‘Cost the return time’ in the Schedule Dynamo group of Parameters.

By turning this option off, all schedule costs will be calculated as if the last call is the end of the driver’s shift - there is no time or distance calculated for a return to the depot and the runs are shaped accordingly.

Likewise, if your drivers start their day at the first call rather than at the depot, turning off ‘Cost the lead time’ will ensure that time and distance calculations only commence from the first scheduled call for each trip.

Both of these options are on by default, which suits most operations. With the default options selected, the time and distance from the last Customer to the Depot is calculated and included in the costing of each vehicle’s scheduled trip.

To find out more about these options, please contact Client Support.

FAQs

Q: What is the minimum data requirement to do modelling with Odyssey?

In general, all we need is a list of customers, their addresses and the size of each order delivered or picked up, in Excel format. Even if you only know the suburb each customer is in, that’s enough detail to produce a schedule.
