Transit Goes International!

Odyssey

I have great pleasure in announcing that, after 35 years of successes in Australia, we have finally implemented Odyssey overseas. We made the sale to one of the major distribution organisations in New Zealand. As they are a client of ours in Australia, it was a natural progression.

They won’t be the first user of the NZ version of Odyssey, however, as we’ve done some modelling and fixed route reviews for other clients.

In fact, internationalising Odyssey was a relatively simple task, given the way we designed our new GIS (geographical information system). All we need is data (known as “vector data”) in whatever format is available in that country.

We then massage the data so that Odyssey can use it to geocode addresses (convert a street address to a latitude and longitude) and to create time and distance information between those addresses. All we then need is local feedback to help us fine-tune the travel times.

The successful implementation of our NZ version of Odyssey means we are ready to launch Odyssey in any country needing daily optimised scheduling, fixed route reviews or “what-if” scenario modelling. If you have an overseas requirement, please let us know!

Rooster Gets A Workout

Odyssey

Although Rooster has been used for fixed route reviews Australia-wide for over 10 years, it has had a good workout from our Route Creation Services group over the past few months for a variety of challenging and interesting projects. Rooster is an acronym for Re-Organisation Of Sales Territories into Efficient Rounds and is one of Odyssey’s scheduling methods. It is typically used by companies who use fixed rounds to service a high-density customer base over a multi-day delivery cycle.

One project was for a client who, although they already use Rooster to optimise their rounds, wanted us to analyse the cost of the “low-hanging fruit”. We conducted “what-if” scenarios to assess the cost impact of reducing the number of visits per week to customers whose average drop size was less than a specified minimum; and the cost of cutting out altogether customers whose total volume was less than a certain amount.

It was easy to confirm that these customers were a net cost to the business, given that 2-3 rounds per state could be saved without them!

Another project used a hybrid of Rooster and Dynamo for a client who wanted to assess the possibility of scheduling a week’s worth of orders in one schedule, with the key requirement being a balanced workload. This involved using Rooster to spread the work evenly over the week and Dynamo to spread each day’s work evenly between the drivers, while taking access restrictions and vehicle capacities into account. Usually customer preferences dictate delivery requirements; however, if you can encourage your customers to be flexible, this unconstrained approach can save millions.

A third project was an optimised re-route for sales reps over a 4-week cycle - at face value, fairly straightforward – however, the client wanted the reps to be scheduled in a wave across Melbourne so that they all worked in the same area each day, rather than in stand-alone territories. As this is an excellent way to save money on the deliveries following on from the sales call, this functionality was added to Rooster as part of the project.

Odyssey Handy Hints - Comprehensive Export

Handy

Comprehensive export (either Excel or Access format) is a feature that exports all of your dataset information, including the Schedule.  When you create a comprehensive export you have a snapshot of all the information from a dataset at a particular point in time.

The process is simple:

  • In the dataset you want to save, click on the ‘Export’ button from the Odyssey Explorer main screen, or use the menu and choose Action --> Export.
  • In the ‘File path’ box, select the folder where you want to save the file and type a file name.
  • Select ‘Comprehensive set for [Access/Excel]’ in the ‘Template’ box

When you want to look at the data in Odyssey again, you simply create a new dataset and do a Comprehensive Import using the file you created.  If you want to import everything, including the Schedule, you have to set the Import Options to "Delete all existing and append new".

The Comprehensive set can also be useful if you have a Client Support query that relates specifically to your data.

FAQs

Q: How can a computer help me schedule my vehicles? I know the runs like the back of my hand…

Routing and scheduling software increases the effectiveness and efficiency of both the vehicle scheduling process and operational transport activities.

Whilst most companies concentrate on developing more efficient routes, of almost equal value is that the actual vehicle routing and scheduling processes demand fewer staff and time resources; hence, the overall streamlined planning process can be much more straightforward, leading to easier measurability.

By taking the unexciting and often laborious aspects out of the routing and scheduling processes, the reduced stress levels leave the human resource to concentrate on strategic and structural matters or issues.
